What is the Paleo diet and what can I eat?
What is the Paleo diet and what can I eat?
The paleo diet takes us back to the most primitive of times and is based on the foods that are likely to have been eaten around 2.5 million to ten thousand years ago. So, how can we adapt this to our modern way of living?
What is the purpose of the Paleo diet ?
Modern farming is what introduced dairy, grains and legumes to our diet and it has been believed that the human body has not been able to adapt to these changes over time which has contributed to the increase of obesity and related diseases.
The diet is therefore designed to resemble the whole-food diet we would have eaten hundreds of years ago to help regain balance within the body and eating foods which align with your digestive system.
What foods can I eat on the Paleo diet?
The main guideline for sticking to this diet is to consume only whole foods. This means nothing that has been processed or full of additives such as sugar, soft drinks, grains, the majority of dairy products, legumes, artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils, margarine and trans fats. Avoiding these products can help keep you on the Paleo diet path.
The best foods to stick to are fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, lean meats, in particular grass-fed animals or game such as venison, fish, especially those high in Omega 3 such as mackerel, and oils from fruits and nuts such as olive oil or coconut oil.
Here at Aberdeenshire larder we have a variety of meats suitable for Paleo diets. Venison has more protein than any other meat and rich in iron this is the closest you can get to eating wholesome wild food!
